The accident rate has been shown to increase by a factor of five to ten times on icy roads. The use of sand and anti-icing chemicals on our highways has been proven to reduce the accident rate and prevent skidding accidents. When highways are treated with sand or anti-icing chemicals as applicable, the accident rate returns to normal within one hour according to studies.
IceChek Instruments Limited is a Canadian fabricator of testing supplies. Winter driving safety is our area of focus. The company produces a road friction measurement attachment for trucks. Using an electronic sensor, the force required to induce a sideways slippage of the test tire is measured. The sampling rate is usually one reading per 27.7 meters at 100 kph.
IceChek development testing is performed in winter weather conditions such as black ice, freezing rain, sleet and blizzards. An important aspect of IceChek development testing is monitoring the use of sand (abrasives) and salt or anti-icing chemicals. Test runs are frequently carried out before and after sand spreader trucks have applied sand to assess the initial effectiveness as well as the rate of dispersion of the sand due to traffic and wind.
